Farm Matters

By Rita LeRoy

Loma Vista Farm, as a program of the Vallejo City Unified School District, seeks to enhance academic success, increase social development and community, and promote environmental stewardship.

The Farm provides a rich learning environment where students can learn through hands-on experience. The Greenhouse, gardens, and animals provide students of all ages and abilities with many lessons in math, science, language arts, and history. Also, very important are lessons in health. Health is the common denominator in lessons on the Farm as we promote healthy minds, bodies, environment, and community.

California Department of Education’s, Superintendent Torlakson, has long been a champion for students’ health. He knows that healthy students not only excel academically, but also are more likely to be positively engaged in social, community, and extracurricular activities.  The benefits of supporting student health are far reaching.

Loma Vista Farm is the perfect place to provide the nutrition knowledge and skills students need to make healthy food choices for well-being and success in school and throughout their lives. Through nutrition, food, agricultural literacy, garden-enhanced nutrition education, cooking/food preparation in our indoor classroom, and agricultural activities Loma Vista Farm is
a great resource in supporting healthy students.

adults in a full range of agriculture topics, 4-H projects for youth, and is open to the public for families to drop in to learn and experience farm life. The Greenhouse provides low cost,
high quality vegetable starts and other plants for families to grow at home. The gardens provide low cost, organic produce fresh for the pickings. Come on by and enjoy a taste of farm life.

The Loma Vista Farm offers field trip opportunities for groups including: public schools, daycare, preschools, private schools, developmentally disabled groups, senior citizen groups, scouts,
and more. Your group can work a vegetable garden, help care for animals, and plant in the Greenhouse. Don’t forget to bring a lunch to eat by the pond. For a small entrance fee your group can visit Loma Vista Farm from Monday through Friday, 9:00 to 2:30.
